The Kayak Tour explores the Dolphin Sanctuary and Ships Graveyard Maritime Heritage Trail...just 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD. This tour is recommended for adults and children over the age of 10 years, although we have had younger children come out and have great fun!

Tours are conducted in stable, very comfortable one or two person sea kayaks which are are suitable for all levels of fitness and experience. We launch from a boat ramp covered in non-slip matting; you will get into the kayak on "dry land" and we will slide you into the water, with care you will not even get your feet wet!

If you are a novice or would prefer a real easy experience you may be able to paddle with the guide in a 2-person kayak; this would incur an extra fee and can only be arranged by phone bookings. Dolphin Sanctuary SUP Hire × × × × × × Book Now 4 Available
Dolphin Sanctuary SUP Hire

Dolphin Sanctuary SUP Hire

Stand Up Paddle Boarding is all the rage. Come try it at the Dolphin Sanctuary and Ships Graveyard. We hire the latest standup paddle boards which are stable and easy to paddle.

We hire Standup Paddle Boards (SUP) from Garden Island in the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary and Ships Graveyard…the best location for paddling in Adelaide. You can explore the beautiful mangrove creeks and search for the Port River Dolphins with your family or friends.

Exploring this sensational area by SUP is the most environmentally sensitive way to view the Port River Dolphins.

Our SUP boards have been specifically chosen to enable easy paddling and fast learning of new skills. We will have the boards and paddles ready for you at the launch site will help you set up and give basic instruction if required, supply a map and advice on best spots and SUP safety-you then create your own unique adventure!

This fee is for the hire of a SUP or Hobie Eclipse board for two hours beginning at the time indicated on the booking calendar. This includes some time for us to explain local area and safety information.

If this will be your first trial of standup paddle boarding we prefer that you book onto a Dolphin Sanctuary SUP Tour to receive more detailed instruction on the skills, safety and awareness to look after yourself and the equipment.

SUP is an acronym that stands for “standup paddleboarding” and it is taking the water sports world by storm. SUP uses a surf style board and a long paddle. In that regard, it is a cross between canoeing and surfing. While originally made popular by surfer Laird Hamilton as he used the paddle to help him catch the towing waves found in Hawaii, SUP is not only for surfing any longer. Standup paddling can be done in a variety of forms such as on flat water protected lakes to easy beach paddling, to open water paddling and all the way to surfing waves.

The Hobie Mirage Eclipse Stand Up Pedal Board is unique. It is unlike anything that people have seen before as it combines the looks of a scooter with a paddle board. The result is a board that reworks anything that anyone has done before and made it into a completely different workout that uses the strongest muscles in your body, you legs.

The Hobie Eclipse Stand Up Pedal Board is another way to get into SUP activity. The eclipse is more stable, and quicker than most paddle boards and the learning time is much quicker. As an example it can be compared to getting on a scooter as a opposed to a skateboard. It is way easier to learn how to scooter right. That’s because it has handles that you can hold onto for balance, similar to the Eclipse.

Bookings essential. Kayak Rolling and Rescue Course × × × × × × ×
Kayak Rolling and Rescue Course

Kayak Rolling and Rescue Course

Learning the impressive skill of Kayak Rolling is easy and fun in our course. The latest training methods are applied to ensuring you develop sound and safe techniques at your own pace.

Learning the very impressive skill of kayak rolling is easy and fun in our course. In this course the latest training methods are applied to the ancient art of kayak (Eskimo) rolling ensuring that you not only develop sound and safe technique but have a lot of fun along the way.  Several other forms of self rescue are also included.

The skill of eskimo rolling, more correctly kayak rolling,  involves righting a capsized kayak without exiting the boat. Roll training is great for kayaking and water confidence. The dreaded unplanned capsize and swim is always in the back of a novice or intermediate paddler's mind and this can really detract from the pure joy of kayaking. Knowing what to expect, being practised and having a few options will quickly get rid of tension and apprehension as well as making you much less likely to capsize because you will be relaxed!

Our course uses the latest instructional methods that gradually introduce the specific movements of the rolling action. The course consists of 2 hour session and we highly recommend following this with one of our supervised practice sessions. These can be booked via our website as well.

The session is conducted using one kayak between two people for safety and to facilitate successful training techniques...best to book with a friend to learn with!

Lessons are conducted in a heated indoor pool. The content of the session may include:

Adjusting your cockpit for comfort and control

Core warm-up (see comments later)

Capsize with partner to rescue (building confidence)

The “balance brace” technique

Transitioning from balance brace to partial and full capsize and recovery.

The "Butterfly Roll"

Transitioning to the Layback or Greenland roll

The Layback or Greenland roll

Drills that can be done to build fitness and confidence

Cowboy Rescue

Reenter and roll with paddle float

In teaching rolling we begin with activities that build the water confidence, balance, core strength and flexibility required for rolling.  The best first roll to learn is the Greenland or Layback Roll. It requires the least flexibility, strength and refinement to bring you upright consistently. If you intend to do white water kayaking, surfing or just for fun there are a variety of other rolling methods that can also be learnt.

You will need to bring:

  • Suitable clothing; board shorts over bathers and a rash top or light thermal top. If you feel the cold a wetsuit is recommended or can be hired. Please let us know when booking.

  • Diving or swimming goggles (these can be provided).

  • Drink

People have many and varied opinions on the skill of Eskimo rolling. One is that it is a difficult skill and learnt by more experienced kayakers only. The basic action of rolling is relatively simple and is easily learnt. There are however several serious barriers to learning. There is no reason why rolling cannot be one of the first kayaking skills learnt by a novice. That is the way the Eskimos approached it, for them it was an essential and life saving skill!

It is often stated that it is the best self rescue method and everyone who paddles on the moving water or sea must learn it. My view is that it is just another skill that makes kayaking so much fun and regular rolling training is a great way to keep fit, flexible and develop great core strength and water confidence.

When performed by a fit, flexible and trained paddler it is the best self rescue method by far. When attempted by a rolling novice in real conditions where fitness and refinement is absent it is a good way to dent your confidence and do serious injury that could stop you paddling then and there! Learn this skill from a professional kayak educator....Adventure Kayaking SA!

The basic action of rolling is relatively simple and is easily learnt. There are however several serious barriers to learning.

New skills are learnt by adding the specific new movement to something we can already do well. There is nothing in or normal lives or other sporting skills that is like the action of rolling. This makes initial development of the skill hard for some.

Humans have an innate fear or anxiety with being underwater for obvious survival reasons. This anxiety affects us in many ways. The most obvious is the rapid depletion of oxygen stores in the body and the ensuing rush to get back above the water at all costs...not desirable if you want to spend some time under water setting up for a roll. When panicked or tense  injuries are more likely to occur. In this panic state our muscles may involuntarily produce survival movements that just aren’t going to allow rolling! Our methods are easy on the body and full capsize is introduced slowly as your confidence grows.

Rolling requires quite specific flexibility and strength. The spine, particularly the lower back and neck, must be flexible and strong. The more flexible the easier it is to roll. The core muscles of the truck, stomach, side and back must be well developed along with the shoulders. If these specific fitness components are poor rolling in a controlled environment may be possible but not advised in real conditions. It may be necessary to build this fitness by a tailored program before rolling is possible. To be a proficient roller this fitness must be maintained and regular rolling training conducted. If you are tight/sore in the upper legs, back or neck consult a health professional about a stretching and strengthening program.

A couple of good starting points for your journey!  View the following web pages and video clips produced by highly competent rolling coaches from overseas whose methods are similar to my own.  You require good core strength and mobility; this is discussed and activities given at: QajaQ Rolls.  Helen Wilson gives a very brief overview of some of the activities we use in our lessons at: Simplifying the Greenland Roll. Also Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson show present excellent tips and images in: The Kayak Roll.

Deep Forest Tour (Bird Sanctuary Park of Month Activity) × × × × × × ×
Deep Forest Tour (Bird Sanctuary Park of Month Activity)

Deep Forest Tour (Bird Sanctuary Park of Month Activity)

The Deep Forest Tour explores the amazing back creeks of the Barker Inlet. You will feel like you are in a remote jungle! This is a special tour conducted as part of the Park of the Month activities for Friends of National Parks.

This is a special kayak tour conducted for National Parks SA and aims to showcase the stunning "mini wilderness" of the northern Port River estuary which forms a substantial part of Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park - Winaityinaityi Pangkara and the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

The Deep Forest Tour  explores the amazing back creeks of the Barker Inlet. This little know "mini wilderness zone" will have you feeling like you are in a remote jungle!  In this area is the largest mangrove forest in southern Australia. Few people know of the amazing environment that this forest has created. It is true old growth forest with some of the trees being up to 600 years old. We will lead your through the many interlinked mangrove creeks that wind through the magnificent trees and we may even see some of the Port River Dolphins and many of the species of bird that call this place home. This is three hours of incredible adventure that we can only run when the tides are just right. If you like kayaking and exploring strange and beautiful places you have just got to join us on this one! Don't miss out.

This tour departs from the Garden Island boat ramp, Garden Island road, Gillman and heads out to the Barker Inlet. We  explore the beautiful mangrove zone of the Barker Inlet. The tour takes approximately 4 hours and is  9 Km or so in length. Some of this time spent in the initial safety and skills briefing. The tour is designed for adults. If you would like to bring the family or children younger than 16 years please call us to discuss before booking.

The tours is conducted in stable, very comfortable one or two person sea kayaks. We launch from a boat ramp covered in non-slip matting; you will get into the kayak on "dry land" and we will slide you into the water, with care you will not even get your feet wet!

We prefer to supply 2-person kayaks as these are easier to use for all paddlers, are virtually impossible to capsize and allow for a more social and engaging experience. The Bird Sanctuary encompasses over 60km of coastline north of Adelaide, adjacent to Gulf St Vincent, Adelaide’s northern suburbs and spans across four local council areas. Within the bird sanctuary sits the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park - Winaityinaityi Pangkara. Winaityinaityi Pangkara means ‘a country for all birds and the country that surrounds these birds’ in the language of the Kaurna people.

The Bird Sanctuary sits right at the southern end of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF) and is one of the key feeding and roosting sites for migratory birds who use the flyway each year. Birds fly from as far as Siberia and Alaska, passing through 22 countries. The area acts as a crucial habitat on this migratory route which is used by more than 5 million birds a year, 27,000 of which call Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary home.

Whilst being one of Adelaide’s longest continuous conservation areas, the Bird Sanctuary is home to 263 unique fauna and flora species. In particular, the Bird Sanctuary helps protect resident and migratory shorebirds, including threatened species such as Curlew sandpiper, Ruddy turnstone, Red knot and Eastern Curlew as well productive mangroves, marine and coastal assets, river systems and many significant terrestrial species and ecological communities.

Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary NP Kayak Tour(Park of Month) × × × × × × ×
Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary NP Kayak Tour(Park of Month)

Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary NP Kayak Tour(Park of Month)

The Bird Sanctuary encompasses over 60km of coastline north of Adelaide, adjacent to Gulf St Vincent and is one of the key feeding and roosting sites for migratory birds and a great location for a kayaking adventure!

This is a special kayak tour conducted for National Parks SA and aims to showcase the stunning "mini wilderness" of the northern Port River estuary which forms a substantial part of Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park - Winaityinaityi Pangkara.

This tour departs from St. Kilda boat ramp, Cockle Street ,St. Kilda and heads out to the Outer Harbour region via the Barker Inlet and Northern Port River estuary. We  explore the beautiful mangrove zone of the Barker Inlet and paddle out to Bird Island Conservation Park. The tour takes approximately 5 hours and is 12 Km or so in length. Some of this time spent in the initial safety and skills briefing as well as a short walk on Bird Island.

If you are booking as a single a 1-person kayak will be supplied. If you are a novice or would prefer a real easy experience you may be able to paddle with the guide in a 2-person kayak; this would incur an extra fee and can only be arranged by phone bookings.

If you are booking as one of the Friends of National Parks please use the booking code provided to access the special "Park of the Month" deal.

This is an exciting place to sea kayak and a unique environment to explore. The area is a nature lovers "paradise" with not only the migratory birds to view but local shorebirds, the Port River Dolphins generally make an appearance and the Outer Harbour breakwater is a favourite haul out zone for Australian Sea Lions and Long Nosed seals.
